06 June 20 - 06 June 25
06 June 20 After a strenuous month together, our expedition team parted ways, and I went to Denali National Park to rest and reflect. I spent hours observing and photographing the region’s abundant wildlife—caribou, moose, beaver, dall sheep, and the beautiful blonde grizzlies.
daily stories still to come
06 June 25 Thumbing my way 260 miles to Anchorage, I ingested unforgettable images of some intriguing characters—calloused-hands Jim of the Alaskan Railway with his raspy voice and tall tales, the life-threatening stories of some veteran mountaineers, and the treetop tour (via zip-line) of a boggy wilderness fort belonging to a couple of real-life Huck Finns. From Anchorage, I chartered to my final dream destination via floatplane — Katmai National Park. There are no roads into this pristine grizzly bear sanctuary. Katmai, recently made famous by the documentary on Timothy Tredwell, the “Grizzly Man,” is home to the massive Alaskan brown bear. These animals can stand 14 feet tall and weigh more than 1200 pounds. For eight days I camped alone on the edge of Naknek Lake near the salmon-run waters of Brooks River.
